Leadership Issues

  • The Montreal Protocol has been signed by all 126 United Nations members. (Q15)
  • As a result of the Montreal Protocol, the overall abundance of ozone-depleting chemicals has been decreasing for about a decade.
  • The graph below shows various alternative scenarios -- for example, if the Montreal Protocol had never been agreed upon, it is estimated that the most extremely rising curve would be the case, and we would have a very big problem.
  •  The other curves show the scenarios that would have taken place with various amendments to the Montreal Protocol
  • Only with the amendments at Copenhagen, in 1992, and in Beijing, in 1999, is there a significant reduction in ozone-depleting chemicals.
